You betcha!
Today marks the long awaited (or maybe not?) return of the BMoC's OUA Men's Basketball Pre-Season All-Stars, last selected in 2008.
After relatively little begging and pleading, 14 of the 16 OUA men's basketball coaches agreed to participate, naming pre-season all-star selections for the East and West Divisions.
Coaches could not vote for their own players and votes will be kept anonymous.
So, without further ado, here's how the bench bosses voted before the 2010-11 regular season gets under way.
EAST DIVISION
(number of votes in parenthesis)
1. Warren Ward — Ottawa (6)
2. Manny Pasquale — Laurentian (5)
3. Cole Hobin — Carleton (4)
4. David Tyndale — York (4)
T5. Philip Scrubb — Carleton (2)
T5. Tyson Hinz — Carleton (2)
T5. Ola Adegboruwa — Ryerson (2)
* Six of eight coaches voted
Other players receiving first-team votes included Willy Manigat (Carleton), Andrew Wasik (Toronto), Alex Hill (Toronto), Ryan McNeilly (Ryerson), Dejan Kravic (York).
It's unfortunate two East Division coaches didn't participate because with the varity of names provided — although not as many as were provided in the West Division — there is a good chance that pesky tie for the fifth spot would have been broken.
It's worth noting four Carleton Ravens received votes, including 6-foot-1 freshman guard Philip Scrubb of Richmond, B.C.
"It may be a bit premature, but he's that good," one coach wrote of Scrubb.
At Vancouver College, he led his Fighting Irish to three consecutive B.C. high school Final Four appearances.
Irish co-coach Bill Disbrow,the winningest coach in B.C. prep history, told Howard Tsumura of the Vancouver Province that Scrubb is "the most complete player I have ever coached. And he's got zero ego except that he is confident."
With four players receiving votes, it's obvious why the Ravens nabbed 31 or 41 first-place votes in the season's first CIS Top 10.
Meanwhile, crosstown rival Warren Ward of the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Laurentian Voyageur Manny Pasquale were unanimous choices. Ward is argubly the best player in the division and Pasquale is coming off an OUA Rookie of the Year campaign.
WEST DIVISION
(number of votes in parenthesis)
1. Issac Kuon — Windsor (7)
2. Andrew Wedemire — Western (7)
3. Kale Harrison — Laurier (4)
4. Ryan Barbeau — Western (4)
5. Jamie Searle — Lakehead (4)
* Eight of eight coaches voted
Others receiving votes, in no particular order, were Dan McCarthy (Guelph), Jonathan Moscatelli (Guelph), Scott Brittain (McMaster), Cam Michaud (McMaster), Adam Jespersen (Western), Lien Phillip (Windsor) and Venzal Russell (Lakehead).
Kuon and Wedemire were unanimous choices. And the votes for Barbeau illustrates Western's real inside-outside threat. Barbeau shot 45 per cent from the field and 49 per cent from three-point range last season. He also 120 assists and was one of the most clutch players in the West with a game on the line.
The votes for McCarthy and Moscatelli must make Gryphons fans happy, especially considering both players struggled last season. Not to mention, Guelph head coach Chris O'Rourke completely overhauled the team in the off-season.
There are nine new faces on the Gryphons, including former Windsor Lancer Kevin Cameron and Kareen Malcolm, a Sheridan College transfer who is perhaps the pre-season's best kept secret. Malcolm led the Sheridan Bruins in scoring last season averaging 19 points and six rebounds per game and was named and OCAA all-star. He's created a buzz at the Mitchell Athletics Centre.
"This most random year ever for pre-season all-stars," one coach wrote. "Although some newcomers like Kareem Malcom, etc. haven't been seen yet but could have big impact on teams."
I could write all night about the selections, but I have to stop somewhere or it otherwise becomes a feature, not a blog post.
So, on with the last part of the survey. Coaches were asked to pick OUA East and West Division winners and the eventual OUA Champion.
Here's how they voted:
EAST DIVISION CHAMP
(number of votes in parenthesis)
Carleton (13)
York (1)
* 14 of 16 OUA coaches voted
WEST DIVISION CHAMP
(number of votes in parenthesis)
Western (8)
Windsor (4)
* 12 of 16 OUA coaches voted
OUA CHAMP
(number of votes in parenthesis)
Carleton (12)
Western (2)
* 14 of 16 OUA coaches voted
And there you have it. Discuss amongst yourselves. Or, make you opinions known in the comment box below.
Perhaps next year I'll poll a media panel, too.
Saw Kareem Malcolm play in Halifax vs. X - he is an awesome player. Hit some shots that were off the charts for degree of difficulty

This could be the "perfect" shoe for me. Bought them to run on a mountain trail, mostly muddy and leaves/roots... I was surprised of how comfortable those are... I wear them now as my primary leisure shoe, because they look fantastic and I keep running on my older trail shoes

olar energy is environmentally friendly. Compared to fossil fuels which release greenhouses gases, carcinogens and carbon dioxide, solar cells don't release anything into the air.
