The Steel Blade Tournament that Brock hosts in St. Catharines seems to be the "official" puck drop on the OUA men's hockey season, despite the Czech (supposedly) world junior hockey team playing a few games against the Windsor Lancers and Western Mustangs.
Yes, it's that Steel Blade Tournament, the one that used to be held during the holiday break, will begin Thursday.
And, as Bill Potrecz of the St. Catharines Standard reports, Brock head coach Murray Nystrom has some cuts to make in the coming days — and he'll use the Steel Blade and games in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Bisons nextweeked to help him make those decisions.
"This weekend is huge in a number of areas," said Nystrom, who is entering his 13th season at Brock. "There's a big turnover in player personnel -- we could have half the roster being freshmen this year -- but we also have a new staff who need to familiarize themselves with our players, the level of the game, and the expectations."
FOOTBALLThe Guelph Gryphons haven't scored a passing touchdown all season. And remember, they've played Toronto and York - perennial doormats in the OUA.
So, that has backup quarterback Luke Nangle on call, according to the Guelph Mercury's Rob Massey.
This is precisely what the OUA needs more of: Media coverage in markets outside the college town and features about the players themselves, who hail from outside those college town city limits.
Hey, better late than never, YourOttawaRegion.com has a feature on Queen's Gaels rookie linebacker Sam Sabourin, who hails from Stittsville and had a school record 13 solo tackles in the season opener against the McMaster Marauders.
BASKETBALLNow this is something great to see. The CBC will air the McGill Marlets and Queen's Gaels women's basketball season opener Sept. 18.
According to Earl Zuckerman of the McGill Reporter, "This will be the first time in Canadian Interuniversity Sport history, outside of the national championship tourney, that a CIS women’s hoops game will be televised coast-to-coast."
The broadcast is part of Sports Day in Canada.
