By now, we all know 21-year-old quarterback Jack Creighton quit the St. Mary's University Huskies on Tuesday.
What we don't know is whether he quit in a huff over losing his job as the No. 1 starter. After throwing three interceptions Week 1 in a loss at Acadia, SMU head coach Steve Sumarah benched him Week 2 in favour of U.S. transfer Micah Brown, who, like just about anyone that would have played pivot, was hammered by Laval.
Perhaps Creighton's homesick. Maybe he's overwhelmed with the double duty that comes with being student-athlete.
Whatever the reason, Creighton's leaving Halifax after the first semester.
Make no mistake, Creighton will be a wanted man. The dot-orgers are frothing at the mouth at the thought of landing a former Loney Bowl MVP.
Here's a sampling of the salivation:
Oh look! There's a school in S. Ontario with no veteran QBs and it has a roster loaded with kids he knows from the Niagara Region including a couple of his former teammates at Lakeshore Catholic.
The inference here is Guelph. With sophomore quarterback Chris Rossetti struggling; Lakeshore alumni such as running back Corey Davidson and defensive lineman Mike Millar on the team; and fellow Niagara Region standout receiver Jedd Gardner with a season of eligibility left, Moo U could be an attractive and "fun" place to play.
The shock and awe of Creighton's announcement come from as far away as Calgary:
Holy Crap !!!! Well, he will probably look good in Dinos Red/Black.
But perhaps the most intriguing place for Creighton to play next season is noted by friend of the blog Rob Pettapiece, who pointed out on The CIS Blog that Waterloo is without a program and pivot at the moment.
There's a joke in here about Creighton joining Waterloo, which is about a two-hour drive from his hometown and, like him, the school becomes eligible to play again in 2011, but I'm not witty enough to make it.
Uh, no joke, Rob. This makes sense.
Billy McPhee, who led his Burlington Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a Golden Horseshoe Bowl Championship in 2009, was to be the future at Waterloo's quarterback position, but he fled for Queen's when the steroid bust blew up in Waterloo.
Creighton, meanwhile, grew up in Port Colborne, just two hours southeast of Waterloo.
He is seemingly without a place to play next season, assuming he still wants to — he's made no mention of intentions in regard to football or his next university of choice. And, coincidentally, the Waterloo Warriors are currently without a program and thus a big name star to help lure recruits and transfers in an effort to jump start the program next season.
After sitting out the mandatory 365 days, Creighton would be eligible to play on Sept. 21, 2011 - perhaps a few days earlier, considering he was on the dress roster Sept. 18 and quit a few days later. And with the re-entry of Waterloo, the OUA schedule presumably reverts back to "normal," meaning he'd miss only three games, not four or three and a bye week.
It's a match made in Heaven, no? A top-notch quarterback making a homecoming of sorts to heroically rescue a red-faced program. A perfect fit for everyone.

A man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else.
